After obtaining a Master’s degree in Japanese literature at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Leah Justin-Jinich entered the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations as a PhD student at Harvard University in 2016. Her dissertation explores the complex social and financial ties between “mad verse” (kyōka) poetry groups and artists of the commercial “Pictures of the Floating World” (ukiyo-e). In particular, she is examining paintings inscribed by the eminent poet and cultural figure Ōta Nanpo (1749–1823) brushed by the artists Kubo Shunman (1757–1820) and Chōbunsai Eishi (1756–1829).
