Qiu Ting 丘挺

Qiu TingBorn in Guangdong Province. Currently resides in Beijing. Trained at Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University in Beijing.

Qiu Ting is a unique figure in the contemporary Chinese painting world. His doctorate was a hybrid of Chinese painting theory and practice involving both a written dissertation and an exhibition of his own work; he was one of the first in China to receive such a degree. It is no surprise that Qiu has chosen a work of particular scholarly interest, Zhao Lingrang’s Summer Mist along the Lakeshore, one of the MFA’s finest Northern Song landscape paintings.

Qiu Ting has painted a landscape in his own style that captures the wistful lyricism of the Zhao Lingrang original, using the mist as a visual trope that ties the two works. Qiu has added extensive inscriptions at the end of his painting, containing a collection of commentaries on Zhao Lingrang that range from historical texts to Qiu’s own reflections.
